Allen tips Bassey to shine in Europe

Former head coach of Bukola Babes, Festus Allen, has tipped Effiom Otu-Bassey, to be a hero at Tippeligaen team, Lillestrom Sportsklubb.

Bassey entered the history books as the first player from the Nigeria Premier League outfit to play in Europe after he secured a three-and-a-half year deal at Lillestrom.

The player arrived Lillestrom in July and was able to convince the team during trials. It’s no surprise to Allen, who played a key role in the development of the midfielder that Lillestrom were fast to orchestrate a football coup .

“He is full of energy and never gets tired. I gave him all the support to become a better player at Bukola Babes,” Allen told SuperSport.com.

“Bassey wasn’t a regular when I joined Bukola Babes, but he worked hard to become a first team player. He’s good with both legs and can play anywhere on the field. Bassey is a typical team player, who works hard for the benefit of the team.

As a coach, you can count on him for results,” he said to SuperSport.com.

Allen lamented that national team coaches ignored Bassey when he was in Nigeria. “Bassey deserves a place in the national team, but the coaches igonored him. I thank God that a team in Europe has recognised his qualities,” Allen stated.

Bukola’s rookies made a splash with shock results that lead to an eight-match unbeaten run and Bassey featured prominently in all the matches.

His five-star outing earned him a place in the NPL Team of the Week for Match Day 12 and he was recognised again on Match Day 13. He mde the Team of the Week for the third time in July.

Bassey also scored twice against city rivals, Kwara United, during the derby in Bauchi and Ilorin.
